Overview
California Micro Devices' CM1418 and
CM1419 Chip Scale devices now offer unprecedented inductor based
EMI filtering for audio headset speaker applications. These devices
offers low power loss due to their inductor-based designs, a feature
of CMD's Praetorian® process technology, which facilitates
the integration of spiral inductors and other discrete components
on the same substrate. By using inductors rather than resistors
to implement the filters, the CM1419 offers unprecedented attenuation
levels and minimal insertion loss in a compact 1.59mm x 1.22mm chip
scale footprint. In addition,
the CM1419 provides high levels of ESD protection through its integrated
ESD diodes on each channel. By integrating EMI filters and ESD protection
on the same substrate, the CM1419 offers a complete, high performance
solution for mobile audio applications.

Features
The CM1419 is an inductor-based EMI filter
array with ESD protection which integrates two Pi filters (C-L-C).
Component values are 117pF-3.0nH-117pF for each channel. A major
benefit of this architecture is the equivalent series resistance
(ESR) of 0.28Ohms typical. The part integrates ESD protection diodes
on all input/output pins, which provide a very high level of protection
for components that may be subjected to electrostatic discharge
(ESD). The ESD diodes connected to the filter ports are designed
and characterized to safely dissipate ESD strikes of ±30kV,
beyond the maximum requirement of the IEC61000-4-2 international
standard. Using the MIL-STD-883 (Method 3015) specification for
Human Body Model (HBM) ESD, the pins are protected for contact discharges
at greater than ±30kV.
The CM1419 features attenuation levels greater than -40dB in the
critical 800 MHz to 2.1 GHz frequencies range. It is housed in an
ultra compact and very cost effective 5-bump, 0.5mm pitch Chip Scale
Package (CSP) of 1.590mm x 1.220mm.

Applications
Ideal For Audio
Applications
The CM1419 is particularly well suited
for speaker applications in mobile handsets because it features
an equivalent series resistance (ESR) of only 0.28Ohms typical,
which needs to be as low as possible in order to minimize insertion
loss, and therefore power loss, ultimately contributing to extended
battery life. Combined with an extremely small footprint and unmatched
attenuation levels, the CM1419 addresses all critical requirements
from wireless handset designers: best electrical performance, most
integrated and compact format, cost effectiveness and power savings.
Sampling,
Pricing and Availability
Both the CM1419 and CM1418 are currently sampling, and pricing starts
at $0.39 and $0.46 each in 1,000 units respectively. Production
is scheduled for Q1 2006. Both products are offered in a lead free
CSP package with CMD’s optional OptiGuard™
coating for increased robustness and durability.
