Introducing
Praetorian® Process Technology
Integrated spiral inductor process delivers unsurpassed EMI filter performance on a single chip

Technology Overview
California Micro Devices is proud to introduce the new Praetorian® advanced ASIP™ (Application Specific Integrated Passive™) process technology that enables the integration of spiral inductors on the same IC substrate as resistors, capacitors and ESD protection devices. For the first time, this exciting new technology enables the design of very high quality, single-chip EMI filtering products that will fulfill the challenging EMI filtering requirements of today's higher-speed data and imaging interfaces. By integrating inductors in lieu of resistors on our EMI filtering products, the innovative Praetorian® process delivers EMI filtering solutions that exhibit attenuation curve characteristics not attainable with other discrete or multilayer L-C or R-C filter products. And because the Praetorian® process is complementary to California Micro Devices' Centurion™ Zener process, these filters are available standard with CMD's high-voltage, low-capacitance electrostatic discharge (ESD) protection.

By utilizing Praetorian® process technology in our chip scale and traditionally packaged products, California Micro Devices can offer high quality low cost, reduced form factor EMI filtering solutions for a wide range of high-speed design requirements.

Industry Leading EMI Filter Performance
Praetorian® ASIP™ devices offer industry leading EMI filter performance characteristics, including:

  • higher cutoff frequencies
  • faster roll-off
  • superior attenuation at required handset carrier frequencies
  • highly effective ESD protection

Current EMI solutions are acceptable for the lower data rates typically used by first generation color displays and camera imagers. Unfortunately, these solutions do not adequately address the higher data rate requirements of the latest model handsets that incorporate higher resolution color LCD displays and camera imagers. These applications require EMI filters that effectively attenuate signals in the carrier frequency range of 800MHz to 2.7GHz for data rates as high as 120Mbps. An ideal EMI filter will attenuate signals across this band while providing a high cutoff frequency and an attenuation curve with a very steep roll-off. California Micro Devices’ Praetorian® process with integrated inductors will satisfy this requirement while providing a high level of ESD protection, all in a single device.

Typical Attenuation Performance with Praetorian® Process Technology

A Lower Cost, Higher Performance Solution
Praetorian®'s integrated inductor process clearly provides a lower-cost, higher performance alternative to solutions comprised of discrete components or ceramic multi-channel inductor/capacitor (LC) arrays. This technology enables the manufacture of a single-package, higher performance filter solution with the added bonus of low-capacitance, high-voltage ESD protection that saves on board real estate and overall component and manufacturing costs. By providing superior EMI filter performance and a high-level of ESD protection in a single device, California Micro Devices' Praetorian® ASIP™ solutions offer the best of both worlds, establishing a clear value proposition for our customers.

Product Applications
Applications for these new devices includes high-speed data ports, control lines, I/O ports and LCD interfaces typically found on today's wireless flip or clamshell handsets, handheld PCs and PDAs.

Availability
Praetorian® process-based products will be available starting the fourth quarter of this year.
